Greening Chelmsford
The 2024/2025 core tree planting season is now over. Parks conservation volunteers, corporate groups and parks staff have all been industriously planting thousands of tree whips throughout the winter. Following this year’s winter planting 85,868 trees will have been planted since the start of our Greening Chelmsford project. The 10-year greening program is an integral part of our fight against climate change and in making Chelmsford a greener, cleaner and happier place to live.
You can see more on our 2024-25 tree planting season, plus a clip of our trainee arboricultural and conservation officer talking about the programme below.

Winter Tree Planting 2024/25
16,846 native whips and approximately 190 mature trees, known as ‘standards’ were planted in the wider Chelmsford area in winter 2024/25. That means over this winter an average of nearly 100 trees per day were planted!

Of course, not every day is a planting day and sometimes hordes of people are needed to plant hundreds or thousands of tree whips in one go.
Our hardy conservation volunteers and corporate groups joined us in all sorts of weather this the winter.
A special shout out to the groups, who even planted through a surprise spot of rain and hail on one of our coldest grey days!
