ARU Sustainable Fashion Week

ARU sustainable fashion week

ARU first ever Sustainable Fashion Week. The week of events takes place online, and explores themes ranging from ‘the future of fashion’ and ‘human rights and fashion’, to ‘sustainable fashion from a business perspective’. You will learn about both the innovative advances taking place within the industry, as well as practical solutions for changing behaviour, from buying second hand and upcycling, to borrowing.

Textile production contributes more to climate change than aviation and shipping combined, consumes lake-sized volumes of fresh water, and creates chemical and plastic pollution. In the UK, we buy more clothes per person than any other country in Europe. Around 300,000 tonnes of textile waste ends up in household black bins every year, sent to landfill or incinerators.
Most recently, allegations against major fast fashion brand, Boohoo, suggest that staff linked to its supply chain are paid as little as £3.50 an hour.

Fast fashion comes at a cost, both environmentally and socially. The purpose of ARU’s first Sustainable Fashion Week is to empower our students and the local community to do things differently, whilst also providing an insight into the trends and innovations taking place within the fashion industry itself.
