We are proud to share that all general waste collected in Essex is no longer sent to landfill! Instead, it now goes to the Energy from Waste (EfW) facility in Rivenhall, operated by Indaver. The EfW plant will generate up 65 megawatts of electricity, helping to power the facility itself, with the remaining energy exported to the electrical grid to supply homes across Essex.
This change supports a key objective in the ‘Waste Strategy for Essex’- achieving zero waste to landfill by 2030. By diverting waste away from landfill, Essex is reducing greenhouse gas emission from waste disposal by around 30% compared to traditional landfill methods.
Recovering EfW materials is a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to landfill, turning what would otherwise be discarded into a valuable energy resource. Residents are still encouraged to reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible, as EfW only treats materials that cannot be recycled or composted.
As Chelmsford continues to work towards a sustainable, circular future, we’ll keep sharing updates on local waste and recycling initiatives. Together we can reduce waste, lower emissions, and move closer to a truly zero-waste Chelmsford.
