Admirals Park Local Nature Reserve and Tower Gardens

Admirals Park, Tower Gardens and West Park, found close to Chelmsford’s city centre, offers something for everyone. The varied landscape and available recreational facilities cater for all ages and interests. For the sports-minded, the parkland provides ample space for cricketers, footballers, bowlers, anglers, canoeists, tennis players, outdoor gym enthusiasts, walkers and cyclists. Bootcamp and Keep Fit classes also take place regularly in the open green spaces.  There is a well-equipped play area for the younger visitors to Chelmsford, as well as excellent formal gardens, conservation areas, and woodland and riverside walks for nature enthusiasts.

Conduit

Tower Gardens contains a rather iconic and photographed piece of Chelmsford history. Within the gardens on raised ground, a 200 year+ stone crafted structure can be viewed within a landscaped setting. It is in fact the ornate structure that used to sit over the towns public water supply pipe located outside Shire Hall and Tindell Square in 1814. It was provided for the towns people by the parish aided by a subscription of £100 from a local merchant, Mr Robert Greenwood.

By 1852 the town had arranged other sources of water supply, so the conduit and its housing were obsolete. In that year it was re-sited at the Springfield junction. By 1940 it was causing an obstruction and was taken down and rebuilt in its current location.

Wildlife spotting

Admirals Park is a really important location for a huge range of wildlife. This is in part due to the fact that it is part of the river corridor of the River Can. This means it is important in linking other habitats together and it provides a route for wildlife to travel into the centre of town. Also, the mix of different habitats (woodland, ponds, grassland, scrub and the river) provides food and shelter for many different species.

In River Can itself on the banks you might spot Kingfishers, Otters, Fish, Damsel flies and Daubenton bats

In the woodland you might hear or spot Woodpeckers, Tree creepers, Squirrels, Shield bugs and Foxes

In the grassland you might see Oxeye daisies, Rabbits, Red Admiral butterflies, Buff-tailed Bumblebees and Slow worms.
