Parks & Conservation Volunteer Leader

Despite the weather getting colder and wetter our volunteers have still been as busy as ever.  Their tasks have varied greatly – they have dug and cleared ditches, coppiced, and started dead hedging, but their greatest task has been tree planting, managing in some cases to plant over 1000 trees in just a few hours.

We have been planting native species and in years to come these will help create some lovely woods and help to provide great homes for many insects, birds, and mammals. Even within the first year we would hope to see insects using the long grass and wildflowers that might appear and birds coming to feed. Small mammals like mice will like the long grass too so they can hide from predators. As the trees grow, they will support lots more wildlife, for example Oak trees can support some 2,300 species!
