Crab Apple

Crab apple is a small, rounded tree that can live up to 100 years. Its bark is grey-brown and often gnarled with age. The tree supports wildlife—its leaves feed moth caterpillars, its spring flowers offer early nectar for bees, and its fruit is eaten by birds and mammals. Crab apples are also valued in orchards for their long flowering period, aiding pollination. Traditionally, the fruit was used in jellies and drinks, while the wood is good for carving and sweet scented firewood.
