The City Councils Greening Chelmsford programme is now in its third planting season.
In addition to the 15,000 young woodland seedlings that are being planted in parks areas by Parks Volunteers, throughout the borough this year, some 500 larger “standard trees” are also being planted by Parks Staff.
Standard trees are approx. 1.8m in height and are used in situations where a larger individual tree is more appropriate. The trees selected are appropriate to the location, i.e. large native trees in large parks, and more ornamental varieties in urban settings.
The trees used are containerised, which gives a better chance of establishment and survival by reducing the risk of the roots drying out in transit and during the planting process. They are then irrigated in order to aid establishment during the first years of being in their new home.
This year we are planting trees throughout the borough, enhancing areas such as the West Way approach to The City, replacements and new planting in parks, and new planting in both the Tile Kiln and western residential areas .
